Centre Director Christian J. Tams has published a new book, Self-Defence against Non-State Actors, with co-authors Mary Ellen O’Connell and Dire Tladi. The book is published by Cambridge University Press, as Volume 1 of the Max Planck Trialogues co-edited by Anne Peters and Christian Marxsen. In a novel scholarly format, the book presents the complementary (and at times competing) perspectives of the three distinguished co-authors on the law of self-defence against non-state actors. The trio is composed so as to engage different modes of legal thinking, intellectual paradigms, regional backgrounds, and professional specialisation. By explicitly focussing on the authors’ divergence and disagreement, a richer understanding of self-defence against non-state actors is achieved, and the legal challenges and possible ways ahead are identified.
