GCILS played a key role in the third biennial London Conference on International Law held in Westminster, London on 17 and 18 October 2024.
The London Conference is dedicated to exploring the latest developments in international law and providing participants with the highest-level insights from leading experts in the field. This year, the conference heard from more than 80 leading international speakers discussing a wide range of topics, and it was attended by more than 600 professionals working in the field of international law. Additionally, for the first time the conference was live-streamed, with hundreds of remote participants joining from as far afield as Australia, Canada, Taiwan, Switzerland and South Africa.
GCILS was one of the convenors of the London Conference, joining major law firms and leading academic institutions in that role. As a member of the steering committee, GCILS’ Director, Professor Christian J. Tams, over the past 15 months was closely involved in developing the Conference theme and selecting speakers. Professor Tams also co-convened two of the Conference’s panels.
Members of GCILS also made significant contributions to two of tbe Conference panels. Dr Joanna Dingwall presented on the panel addressing “Current Issues in Law of the Sea,” which focussed on developments in relation to deep seabed mining and the role of international law and institutions in relation to its regulation. Dr Dingwall spoke alongside Lowri Mai Griffiths of the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Oonagh Sands of Fietta LLP, and the panel was chaired by Professor Sir Malcolm Evans, Principal of Regent’s Park College, University of Oxford.
Professor Helen Duffy spoke on a panel on “Accounting for War”. Her presentation focused on reparation for victims in armed conflict with an emphasis on the role of human rights litigation. The panel was chaired by Professor PierreD’Argent with co-panelists Professors Luke Moffett, Chiara Giorgetti & Ben Brzezicki.
