On 10 November 2023, GCILS Member Dr Joanna Dingwall delivered a training session on Investment Protection and Deep Seabed Mining for the Nippon Fellows and interns of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS).
The focus of Dr Dingwall’s session was on the increasingly important topic of investment protection rights and dispute resolution options in relation to mining activities within the deep seabed area beyond national jurisdiction. As exploitation activities may soon begin within this global commons, the extent of the rights and obligations of deep seabed miners operating within this zone is in need of urgent resolution.
This session for the Nippon Fellows was part of their capacity-building and training programme at ITLOS on dispute settlement on the law of the sea. This programme is funded by the Nippon Foundation and its participants are government officials and researchers, mainly from developing countries, who are currently working on issues related to the law of the sea, maritime law or dispute settlement. It provides participants with a unique opportunity to develop their legal skills and deepen their practical knowledge of dispute settlement in the law of the sea under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
