Eleni Methymaki is Lecturer in International Law at the School of Law, University of Glasgow. Previously, she was Departmental Lecturer in Public International Law at the Oxford Law Faculty (2022–2023), Research Associate at the Faculty of Sustainability, Leuphana Universität Lüneburg (2021-2022), and Research Associate for International Law at the University of Glasgow (2016-2018). She has also taught international law subjects at various Oxford colleges, at Queen Mary University of London, at the University of Tartu, and the University of World Economy and Diplomacy in Uzbekistan, and has experience in executive education.

Eleni is also currently finalising her DPhil thesis at the Faculty of Law, University of Oxford, her research focusing on the role of domestic law in international adjudication. Her doctoral studies were generously funded through an Oxford University Law Foundation scholarship. She has studied law at the University of Cambridge (LL.M., first class), University of Glasgow (LL.M. res., dist.), the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (LL.B., dist.; LL.M. in International Legal Studies, dist.), and Freie Universität Berlin.

Eleni’s research interests centre on systemic issues and features of international law, questions of international law compliance and enforcement, sanctions, dispute settlement, and the international-domestic interface. She has published on a range of international law topics, including international inspections, the relationship of international and domestic law, sanctions, immunities, and international investment law, and has edited the 3rd edition of The Statute of the International Court of Justice: A Commentary (OUP 2019), amongst others. Since 2016, Eleni has joint responsibility for the UK Materials in International Law (UKMIL) of the British Yearbook of International Law.

Beyond academia, Eleni is experienced in advising states, international organizations, and private parties on international law matters and dispute resolution before domestic and international courts, including the International Court of Justice. She is a Greek qualified lawyer, and has previously practised law in the in-house litigation team of a private corporation in Athens (Greece), in the fields of criminal, labour, and corporate law.
