Textbooks and the Discipline of International Law
Textbooks are having a moment in international law scholarship. And for good reason. We hold them “in the palm of our hands” (Morosini/Leão, 2021) as students and teachers of international law, we reach for them when we look for short and straightforward answers to complex questions within, and often beyond, our discipline. Textbooks set international law’s disciplinary frames (Bernardino, 2021), telling us what counts as international law and what does not.
On 27 January we welcome Dr Luíza Leão (Postdoctoral Fellow at the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development) and Dr Ana Luísa Bernardino (Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Helsinki), leading voices of disciplinary thinking on textbooks, to speak about their ongoing projects and reflect on the importance and potential of thinking about the role of textbooks in international law teaching, research, and pedagogical practice.
At the event, Dr Leão will introduce her work on Brazilian international law textbooks and her project with Professor Fabio Costa Morosini on ‘Textbooks as Markers and Makers of International Law’. Dr Bernardino will then offer reflections building on her own project. The conversation will be moderated by Eleni Methymaki (Lecturer in International Law at the University of Glasgow), and a Q&A will follow.
The event will be followed by a drinks reception in the atrium of the Wolfson Medical School attendees are welcome to attend.
