Mercenaries in Contemporary Armed Conflicts: The Wagner Group and Beyond
Join us on Tuesday 31 January at 5.00pm UK time, at the Western Infirmary Lecture Theatre, for a talk with our guest Dr Sorcha MacLeod from the University of Copenhagen.
Dr MacLeod is a member of the UN Working Group on the use of Mercenaries, an Associate Professor and Marie Skłodowska Curie Individual Fellow in the Centre for Private Governance in the Faculty of Law, University of Copenhagen. She specialises in business, human rights and security, in particular the human rights impacts and regulation of Private Military and Security Companies. She holds a PhD from the University of Glasgow, UK, and an LLM in International Natural Resources Law and LLB (Hons) in Scots Law from the University of Dundee, UK.
Dr MacLeod will be talking about the use of mercenaries and related actors in contemporary armed conflicts around the globe, and the international legal issues raised by their use. Her talk will include a discussion of the Wagner Group, a Russian private military contractor that has become particularly notorious during the war in Ukraine.

The event will start with a presentation by Dr MacLeod, followed by a panel discussion with our GCILS colleagues, Dr Andrea Varga and Dr Mohamad Janaby, as well as a Q&A with the audience. After the event, we will have a wine and canapes reception for our in-person attendees.
