On Friday 6 February we are lucky to be hosting Matt Pollard of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Matt is Legal Adviser in the ICRC’s Legal Division. As a thematic Legal Adviser, he addresses starvation and hunger in situations of conflict, private military and security companies and other businesses in situations of armed conflict, and torture and other ill-treatment. He is also part of the team updating the ICRC’s legal commentaries to the 1949 Geneva Conventions and their Protocols, about which he will speak at this event.

Matt has held senior legal roles in several non-governmental organizations, as well as having practised law in a private law firm. He has a law degree from the University of Victoria, Canada, and an LLM and PhD in international law from the University of Essex, United Kingdom.

Sirte. Massive destruction following weeks of heavy fighting. The city was empty and very few civilians returned to check the state of their houses. An ICRC team visited the city to assess the situation.
