This series offers students the opportunity to hear directly from leading practitioners in the field of international law and to gain valuable insight into life beyond the University.
This time, we are pleased to welcome Chris Stephen, a member of Ampersand Advocates and a barrister dually qualified in Scotland and in England & Wales. Chris specialises in administrative and public law, international law, and dispute resolution, and his career spans both government service and private practice. Before being called to the Bar, he served for over five years as an Assistant Legal Adviser at the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, where he represented the UK before international institutions including the United Nations in Geneva and New York, and in proceedings before the International Court of Justice. He has also acted in arbitration proceedings under bilateral investment treaties, and as junior counsel in high-profile public inquiries, extradition cases, and constitutional litigation of national significance.
Chris will speak about his experiences navigating a career in international law—moving between government, international courts, and private practice—and will share practical reflections on the opportunities and challenges for aspiring international lawyers today.
The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and an informal drinks reception, offering further opportunity for discussion and networking.
