We are pleased to invite you to our next GCILS webinar, which will focus on the topic of the Neoliberal State.

On Monday, 4 April 2022, please join us at 4:30pm (UK Time), to hear from Professor Pierre Schlag, University of Colorado. With Dr Zoran Oklopcic, Carleton University, as his discussant, Professor Schlag will talk to us about the rise and spread of a particular type of state organization and the implications it has had for the modern legal form.

There are many neoliberalisms. The expression is polysemic and, at times, seems a bit non-referential. Some thinkers believe it may even be better to do without the concept altogether. Professor Schlag is not one of them. What are the roles of law and legalism in the neoliberal state?  What new forms do neoliberal law and legalism enact?  In what ways does neoliberalism challenge the liberal democratic state?  What’s next?

Pierre Schlag is the Distinguished Professor at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and Byron R. White Professor at the University of Colorado Law School. One of the biggest names in the field of critical legal theory in the last forty years, he is the author of numerous books and articles, including The Enchantment of Reason (1998) and How to Do Things with Legal Doctrine (2020)(with Amy Griffin).

Zoran Oklopcic’s is an Associate Professor at the University of Carleton. A constitutional theorist and an international lawyer, he is the author of Beyond the People: Social Imaginary and Constituent Imagination (2018).
